Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s great archaeological regions. The Zapotec capital of Monte Albán dominates the Oaxaca Valley, while Mitla, Yagul, Atzompa and Dainzú reveal a long history of changing cities, cultures and political centres.

Planning your route
Oaxaca City makes an excellent base. Monte Albán deserves a substantial visit on its own. Mitla can be incorporated into an eastern valley trip, while smaller sites can be combined according to current opening schedules.
