Archaeological sites of Mexico City
Mexico City is one of the few places in the world where a modern capital has been built directly over the remains of an earlier imperial city. Templo Mayor stands in the historic centre beside the Metropolitan Cathedral. Tlatelolco preserves the remains of another major Mexica city, while Cuicuilco reaches much farther back into the history of the Basin of Mexico.
