Yucatán contains some of the best-known Maya archaeological sites in Mexico, but Chichén Itzá and Uxmal are only the beginning. Across the state are ancient cities, ceremonial centres and smaller ruins that reveal very different periods and styles of Maya architecture.

Planning your route
The Puuc region south of Mérida contains a remarkable concentration of archaeological sites. Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil and Labná reward a journey over more than one day. Start early, carry water and check current opening information.
